Carnelian is a type of banded agateA variety of cryptocrystalline quartz (chalcedony), typically banded in appearance. The use of agate in jewellery dates back to the Stone Age. that was often used to carve intaglios as when cut through the lighter layer it created a contrast with the deeper red layer beneath.
