This is a beautiful carved coralAn organic gem, calcium carbonate with a trace of carotene, deposited by tiny sea creatures living in the depths of warm seas in huge colonies. It grows in branches that look like underwater trees. Coral is believed to be one of the oldest forms of gemstone jewellery, with some pieces dating back as far as 23,000 BC. bead necklace that was made circa 1820 and is composed of Italian Neapolitan coral.
Coral was traditionally given either to celebrate the birth of a daughter or as a wedding present. In Roman times it was used as a talisman to protect children. When given to celebrate a marriage the symbolic meaning is for success and longevity. The beads have been textured with a pineapple pattern which further emphasises love, generosity and hospitality. The clasp is 15ct62.5% pure gold (or 625 parts pure gold and 375 parts other metals). Popular during the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco eras but was discontinued in the mid-1930s. gold and has been set with carved coral to represent a classical maiden’s head.
