Such rings were so worn engraved with a simple inscription or merely an appropriate symbol. ring, set with old cutOld Cut (or Old European Cut) diamonds are characterised by a symmetrical rounded outline, and a deep crown and pavilion (the top and bottom sections of a brilliant cut stone when viewed in profile). diamonds, circa 1760. It is gold backed and silverA metallic element which is malleable and ductile, and white in colour, making it ideal for use in jewellery. It is usually mixed with copper to improve its hardness.
