An unusual and very well made 14ct58.5% pure gold (or 585 parts pure gold to 415 parts other metals) gold novelty brooch of a snail on an oak leaf. The leaf has been beautifully carved in carnelian​A translucent red variety of chalcedony which in its turn is a form of cryptocrystalline quartz. ​Carnelian has​ been known and used since antiquity when it was sourced from the surfaces of the Egyptian and Arabian deserts. The ​most prized carnelian has a true blood-red color. and the snail is a brown mottled agateA variety of cryptocrystalline quartz (chalcedony), typically banded in appearance. The use of agate in jewellery dates back to the Stone Age.. His body is studded with rose diamonds. It was most likely made in Austria as the goldsmiths are renowned for this type of work.
